In the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials there are now more than 16,000 clinical trials of acupuncture listed, with around 2,000 new studies being added every year. Here is a summary of the current research evidence, based on National Health and Medical Research Council Level 1 evidence (systematic reviews) and a small number of good quality Level 2 studies (randomised controlled trials). All these trials used human subjects and all are less than 5 years old. Full references are given below the summary table.
